Protagonist Catherine enjoys the spooky atmospherics of the Gothic literature popular at the time and views her stay at the titular abbey through her literary preoccupation.

Invited by a family whose son she is romantically interested in, she begins to suspect—erroneously—that something sinister is going on.

Though likeable, Catherine is not terribly bright. She is further deceived by a social climbing friend and her brother, who courts her in the belief that she is wealthy.

Despite her naiveté, she ultimately ends up with her preferred beau, none the worse for her encounters with the duplicitous schemers.

English writer Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey was first published in 1817. Jane Austen's novel Northanger Abbey adopts the conceits of the Gothic novel in mocking the social mores of the time. Austen uses Catherine's obliviousness as a foil to the machinations of those around her, to comic effect.

The satire Northanger Abbey contains many important themes, including romance and relationships, as the importance of marriage makes characters seek a good match; deceit and manipulation, as John and Isabella manipulate Catherine and others around them; and coming of age, as Catherine evolves from a clueless child into a mature woman.
