In late August 1991, just a week after the attempted coup against Mikhail Gorbachev collapsed, Simon's team were one of the few broadcasters given a rare opportunity to look inside KGB Headquarters. At the time, the agency was promising to reform itself. Across the street, its victims were skeptical of the KGB's new, post-coup promises.
