Walking The Dogs In Lion Farm Estate, Oldbury, West Midlands, On Christmas Day

Lion Farm Estate is a housing development located near Oldbury in the West Midlands, within the Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell. Constructed during the 1960s, the estate originally featured nine tower blocks. However, over time, six of these structures have been demolished, leaving three remaining today.

In the early 1990s, photographer Robert Clayton documented life on the estate, capturing the challenges faced by its residents. His work highlighted issues such as unemployment and the impact of social engineering, where employed and unemployed individuals were allocated to specific blocks. These photographs were later published in his book "Estate" and have been exhibited widely in the UK.


As part of ongoing strategies to improve housing conditions, Sandwell Council has been involved in projects concerning the high-rise buildings on the estate.

Additionally, there have been community efforts to preserve local green spaces, such as the Lion Farm Playing Fields, which are considered valuable recreational areas for residents.
