At the end of the Civil War, the task of transitioning millions of newly freed African-Americans from bondage to freedom was handed to a newly created federal agency made up largely of Army personnel. Their work in Texas, and elsewhere, was met with great resistance from the unreconstructed former rebels. Still there were successes including in education. Sadly, politics ended the Freedmen's Bureau work in the state before it was complete.
