Do you believe Black women face unrealistic expectations about their appearance, especially when it comes to their hair and skin? For generations, we’ve been taught to internalize self-hatred, conditioned to believe that our African features—our hair and skin—are flawed or less desirable. This deeply ingrained belief, rooted in the trauma of colonialism and perpetuated by texturism and colorism, often pushes us to conform to beauty standards that don’t reflect our true selves. Jessica Alford has decided to prioritize her natural hair over wigs, rejecting the false narratives surrounding Black hair. By embracing her natural hair, she believes she is reclaiming her identity and inspiring others to do the same.
