Theta uses a dual token system to keep the utilities of each token separate. The Theta Token (THETA) is the administrative token of the protocol and is validated by the Validator and Guardian nodes. Theta Fuel (TFUEL), on the other hand, is a "gas" token used for network functions such as communicating with smart contracts. Edge Nodes earn TFUEL for sharing resources and delivering video streams.

Theta was founded in 2018 by CEO Mitch Liu and CTO Jieyi Long. Liu earned degrees in computer science and engineering from MIT and an MBA from Stanford Business School. He also co-founded several other projects such as mobile social gaming studio Gameview Studios, ad and app monetization platform Tapjoy, and streaming dApp THETA.tv.
Long has a PhD in computer science from Northwestern University and co-founded THETA.tv with Liu. He developed several proprietary technologies, including instant video game playback and virtual reality streaming. Theta's management team also includes CPO Ryan Nichols, who was previously head of Tencent's Wechat program.
The project has several investors including Samsung, DHVC, IBC and Sony Innovation Fund, while Theta's media advisors include YouTube founder Steve Chen and Twitch founder Justin Kan.

What Makes Theta Network Unique?

Theta's innovation is to bring the benefits of blockchain to the video streaming industry. This decentralizes video delivery and thus improves its quality. A peer-to-peer network eliminates infrastructure bottlenecks as the need for information increases. It also creates a sustainable ecosystem in which online users are encouraged to participate. It is based on a unique dual economy, where rewards encourage users to both consume online content and share online resources.
The project introduced innovative technologies such as Multi-level BFT, a modified Byzantine fault tolerance agreement that enables high transaction throughput; An aggregated signature gossip scheme that reduces communication complexity; and a resource-oriented micropayment pool, a dual-spending off-chain pool designed for video streaming.
Additionally, the protocol is open source, allowing developers and partners to build dApps on the Theta blockchain. Theta team's own THETA.tv was the first dApp to be released on the blockchain, followed by Samsung VR, Cinedigm, Shout! Factory, Pandora.tv and Play Labs.
