Rijssen’s fortunes shifted with the discovery of local clay and sand deposits, sparking an industrial boom in brickmaking. The town's iconic narrow-gauge railways ensured economic efficiency, while its residents worked tirelessly to support their families.

A major part of this transformation was driven by the enterprising Ter Horst family. From operating windmills to pioneering jute processing, they provided much-needed jobs, creating opportunities for generations.
