Peso da Régua - the town's name comes from the name of a Roman house that once stood on the site - "Villa Reguela". Its great development, however, did not begin until after 1756 with the creation of the Royal Company of Winegrowers of the Alto Douro Region, which established the world's first demarcated wine-producing region.

Located on the banks of the Douro River, the village of Peso da Régua was instrumental in the production and marketing of port wine, because it was from here that the barrels were transported in special boats called barcos rabelos to Vila Nova de Gaia, where the wine was aged in local wineries.

In this region, the vines are grown on terraced slopes descending to the river, providing visitors with a number of spectacular views that are best enjoyed from numerous vantage points, such as São Leonardo in Galafura and Santo António do Loureiro.
