Sheldon “Timothy” Herrington Jr., of Grenada, Mississippi, faces a capital murder charge in the death of Jimmy “Jay” Lee, a 20-year-old graduate student last seen on July 8, 2022. Lee was seen leaving his campus apartment twice that same morning.

Although Lee’s body has not been recovered, a judge declared him deceased in October at the request of his parents. Herrington is also accused of concealing Lee’s body.

Both men were alumni of the University of Mississippi. Lee, who was pursuing a master’s degree, was known for his creativity in fashion and makeup and frequently performed in drag shows in Oxford. Police allege Herrington killed Lee to hide a romantic relationship between them.

Investigators reported finding evidence in Herrington's cellphone history, showing he and Lee were in contact the morning of Lee’s disappearance. Herrington allegedly searched online for information about international travel and “how long it takes to strangle someone” shortly after Lee said he was heading to Herrington’s apartment. Surveillance footage later showed Herrington fleeing the area where Lee’s car was abandoned and later retrieving a shovel and wheelbarrow from his parents' home, according to authorities.

Lee, a Jackson native, ran unsuccessfully for homecoming king in 2021, campaigning on themes of self-love and authenticity. He was a gay man well known in the LGBTQ+ community at Ole Miss.

Herrington was arrested two weeks after Lee disappeared but was released five months later on a $250,000 bond after agreeing to surrender his passport and wear an ankle monitor. In March 2023, a grand jury indicted him on a capital murder charge.

Prosecutors have stated they will not seek the death penalty. If convicted, Herrington faces a life sentence. Mississippi law defines capital murder as a killing committed in conjunction with another felony, in this case, kidnapping.

Among the 12 jurors and three alternates were seven men and eight women. Four were Black, and 11 were white. Jurors will be sequestered during the expected 10-day trial and will need hotel rooms.
