Tideswell – “Tidi’s Spring”

Its back into the Derbyshire Dales with a bang this week everyone. As far as the Peak Disyrict goes, this is one of my all time favourites. Welcome to Tideswell, a village which lies 6 miles East of Buxton on the B6049, in a wide valley on a limestone plateau. Standing at an altitude of 1,000 feet above sea level, this is the second-largest settlement within the Peak District National Park, with only Bakewell sporting a higher population.

There is some debate as to how the village got its name. Whilst its generally accepted that Tidi was a Saxon chieftain, but other theories suggest it could mean “Tiding Well”, a water feature situated north of the village that was declared to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Peak by Thomas Hobbes in 1636. Most of the locals don’t call this place Tideswell though. To them, this is Tidza. The residents are known as Sawyeds, owing to a traditional story about a farmer who freed a prize cow from a gate by sawing its head off.

In the Middle Ages, Tideswell was a market town known for lead mining. These days industrial activity is a little limited in comparison, and trade has dwindled a lot in recent years. Now tourism plays a key role in its existence – and the main attraction is the super impressive Cathedral of the Peak.
