7 things we look for when grading Honduran Mahogany for guitar wood.

According to Wikipedia, Mahogany is a straight-grained, reddish-brown timber of three tropical hardwood species of the genus Swietenia, indigenous to the Americas and part of the pantropical chinaberry family, Meliaceae. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahogany

Genuine Mahogany is more difficult to find in 2020 than it was in decades past. However, we stock Genuine/Honduras/Honduras Mahogany lumber, whatever you want to call it. It's the good stuff that Gibson uses to make guitars, pattern makers use to shape patterns, luxury yachts use for marine interiors, wood turners use for woodturning, etc. It's the only acceptable choice when a woodworking project calls for vintage mahogany, as far as I'm concerned.

Is it a rare wood? I suppose so.

Although there are many substitutes, there are no true Genuine Mahogany substitutes, if you get my drift.

We grade each shipment of mahogany tonewood for 7 important criteria, in addition to the our normal lumber grading criteria.

Luthiers have grade requirements that involve: color, grain, pin knots, stability, in addition to standard lumber dimensions.

Even through just having 4/4, 8/4 and 16/4 Genuine Mahogany available sets us apart from most other distributors. However, stocking mahogany is not enough! When we ship mahogany wood, we want our wood to match the stringent requirements of woodworkers around the world. Exotic woods are not inexpensive.
