The little girl was impatient. Her mom, Motown songwriter Kay Lewis Miller - and aunt, Helen Lewis Mastor, another Motown songwriter, were having issues with auditions for a singer. Seems this composition, "Don't Let Me Off the Hook" was giving the singers some serious challenges due to a difficult cadence and complex lyrics.

The little girl was Lisa Miller and she was 8 and she was bored. She was so ready to leave that she asked her mom if SHE could just sing the song so they could "...get OUT OF HERE?" Kay responded that she'd have to ask Mr. Davis.

Hal Davis thought about and said "OK, why not..."; to everyone's astonishment, Lisa nailed the song that had given all the other session singers such trouble. Hal decided to record the song as well as a second song and flew to Detroit to present Motown founder, Berry Gordy, with the tapes. Mr. Gordy liked what he heard and plans were set in motion to fly Kay, Helen and Lisa to Detroit to record at Motown's famous Snakepit studio.

Lisa, billed as "Little Lisa" on record, recorded in Detroit as well as Los Angeles during '64 and '65 with many of Motown's top songwriters and producers. One of those sessions resulted in this recording, "Keep Away," written by her mother and aunt and produced by Motown heavy-hitters Harvey Fuqua and Johnny Bristol.

It's among Motown's tightest productions, a hot production with Lisa providing the contrast: a fully self-assured, fully-controlled, "cool" performance. Lisa was able to hold her own with the raucous, storming Funk Brothers music track. It's easy to hear why Hal Davis and Berry Gordy felt the young girl was a good bet.
