Welcome to Britannia Mine & Museum

Ore was discovered in 1888 by Alexander Allen Forbes and more than 50 million tons of ore was extracted from the mountains. The mine operated from 1904 to 1974 and was once the largest copper mine in the British Empire. It’s told that over 60 000 people from 59 countries lived and worked in this isolated mining community over its course of its life. Underground workings consist of 210km of tunnels, the longest adit being 16km in length. 1750 meters of vertical distance and to a depth of around 650 meters below sea level. At peak production the mill could process 7000 tons of material per day! Over 650 000 tons of copper, 137 000 tons of zinc, 17 000 tons of lead, 188 tons of silver and 15.6 tons of gold.

Although the mine is now closed, the museum has around 7000 different artifacts, 9500 photographs and 3000 documents making Britannia one of the leaders in having the most comprehensive sets of mining records. We would like to thank our very knowledgeable tour guide Elissa, she was great!
