A recent Wildlife Institute of India (WII) assessment reveals that 72% of vulture nesting sites in India have disappeared. While some sites remain active, vulture populations are still in decline due to habitat loss, toxic drugs, and feral dogs. The report identifies 120 active sites out of 425 historical ones, with 93 new sites, bringing the total to 213, 103 of which are in protected areas. Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan account for 63% of the nests. The white-rumped vulture is found at only 69 locations, and the slender-billed vulture has lost all 47 of its historical sites. Despite the diclofenac ban, recovery remains slow.
