They are two actresses who light up a theater every time they tread the boards. One of them has left indelible impressions in the work of playwrights as diverse as Tina Howe and Oscar Wilde, Henrick Ibsen and Naomi Wallace, Janusz Glowaki and Christopher Durang. She was an unforgettable Winnie in Beckett’s Happy Days; and one only wishes Anton Chekhov had lived to see her Arkadina and Ranevskaya. Her equally gifted colleague has graced the premieres of plays by Craig Lucas, Paula Vogel, David Auburn, Edward Albee, Will Eno, and Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. She is so good that one of this year’s judges almost put a hit out on her for dropping out of a play of his to take an understudy assignment in a forgotten Broadway show (she needed the money). Both these actresses could have abandoned the stage completely for film and television; instead, they always return to deliver luminous, crystalline, performances. They shared the stage this season in John J. Caswell, Jr.’s SCENE PARTNERS at the Vineyard. For their distinguished work in the theater and dedication to the craft of acting, the judges are proud to have awarded Obies for Outstanding Performance to JOHANNA DAY and DIANNE WIEST.
