During the Boxer Rebellion (1899-1901) in China, Italy was one of several Western countries that participated in the international military intervention aimed at suppressing the Boxer movement and protecting their nationals and interests in China. Italian soldiers, along with troops from other nations, played a role in the Allied efforts to restore order and protect foreign nationals in China during this tumultuous period.

In 1900, as the Boxer Rebellion gained momentum, foreign diplomats, missionaries, and nationals retreated to the Legation Quarters, a fortified compound in Beijing. The Boxers, driven by anti-foreign and anti-Christian sentiments, laid siege to the Legation Quarters.

While Italy did not have a large military contingent in China during the Boxer Rebellion, Italian soldiers, along with their counterparts from other nations, played a vital role in organizing the defense of the Legation Quarters. They coordinated with others and worked together to fortify the compound, gather supplies, and establish a common defense strategy.

About three miles distant from the Legation Quarter a similar siege took place at the Beitang or North Cathedral of the Roman Catholic Church. French and Italian soldiers under the command of Lieutenant Eugène Darcy and more than 3,000 Chinese Christians held off the Chinese army and Boxers.The cathedral offered a strategic location for observation and defense, and Italian clergy actively participated in its protection.

The conditions inside the Legation Quarters during the siege were dire. The foreign nationals faced shortages of food, ammunition, and medical supplies. They endured constant attacks from the Boxers, who surrounded the compound.

The defense of the Legation Quarters was a cooperative effort among diplomats and nationals from various countries. Despite their cultural and political differences, they united to defend themselves against the common threat posed by the Boxers.

Relief for the besieged legations came in August 1900 when an international coalition force, including troops from Italy, reached Beijing. The intervention marked the end of the siege and the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion.
