In this video, Dr. Amit Chakraborty (Consultant Surgical Oncologist, Head & Neck Cancer Specialist, SSO Hospital) will discuss an important topic i.e., can head & neck cancer spread in the lymph nodes & also is it necessary to dissect lymph nodes in every case?

In head & neck cancer surgeries the lymphatic drainage takes place in the side where the cancer is situated. A lot of times patients ask a question that they are feeling pain in the mouth then why is it necessary to remove lymph nodes of the neck?
This is necessary because it is found that in 30 to 35% of cases the lump is positive. Doctors remove the lymph nodes simultaneously during the surgery to avoid the recurrence of cancer.

Lymph node dissection is mandatory and necessary in every surgery for head and neck cancer otherwise the surgery is not adequate and increases the chances of recurrence of cancer.

If the cancer is spread to both sides of the mouth, then it is necessary to dissect lymph nodes on both sides.
