Saudi Arabia has announced a fresh $368 million aid package to Yemen through the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Programme. The grant, aimed at stabilizing Yemen’s fragile economy, will support the government’s budget, fund public sector salaries, and secure the import of essential goods such as wheat, rice, sugar, and cooking oil. Yemeni Information Minister Moammar al-Eryani welcomed the move as a “critical lifeline” that restores confidence in state institutions and reflects the historic ties between Riyadh and Sana’a’s recognized government.

This latest aid builds on Saudi Arabia’s earlier $500 million package in December 2024, which helped strengthen Yemen’s foreign currency reserves, stabilize the riyal, and ease inflation. With over 22 million Yemenis requiring humanitarian assistance, the support is crucial for addressing severe shortages of food, medicine, and clean water. The funding will also help mitigate outbreaks of cholera and other diseases that have worsened during years of conflict.

Beyond humanitarian impact, the aid carries strong geopolitical weight. By reinforcing Yemen’s internationally recognized government, Riyadh is countering the influence of the Houthis and their Iranian backers. It also signals to the international community that Yemen’s stability is central to regional security. With Saudi Arabia reportedly preparing to counter Tel Aviv through a broader regional axis, stabilizing Yemen ensures a secure southern flank and strengthens Riyadh’s position in the Middle East power balance.
