The pulpit rock and flagpole hike is a staple for any local Nelson resident. This signature hike keeps up with the Kortney tradition of steep climbs in short distances. The various viewpoints unveils the downtown core of Nelson across the lake with its iconic orange bride on your left. The access off of the paved roads is easy for any vehicle and the 1.8km 316m vertical climb to the rock is doable for nearly anyone physical ability. To continue up to the flagpole you will be aggressive challenged with more technical terrain however it covers the same incline trajectory and distance. If you are in the Nelson area and have an afternoon to spare be sure to take on this beauty of a hike as you will not be disappointed.


Trail Stats

Parking lot: elevation 587m, 10 minute drive from downtown Nelson
Pulpit rock: one way trail distance 1.7km, lookout elevation 890m, elevation gain 304m
Flagpole: one way trail distance 3.1km, flag pole elevation 1231m, elevation gain 644m
Estimated hiking time of 1 hour to Pulpit rock view point, 2 hours to the flagpole viewpoint and 1:15 to return to the parking lot. Casual pace including breaks.
