STORYLINE:

Bank workers in Argentina have gone on strike for 48 hours, sparking a minor cash shortage in the South American country.

The bank workers' union - Associacion Bancaria , called the strike for Thursday and Friday to demand a 30 percent pay increase.

The action started with employees of national banks but was soon joined by employees of private and foreign banks.

Workers protested all day on Thursday in the streets of downtown Buenos Aires.

Playing drums and shouting slogans against bankers and the government, protesters invaded a couple of branches of the Argentinian Banco de la Nacion.

Only pensioners are being allowed to collect money that is already running out in ATM machines around the country.
