How many shots do you actually need to capture for a focus stack for your image to be sharp from front to back? If you don't take enough, you won't be able to achieve perfect sharpness. But if you take too many, sorting and merging the photos together is a pain.

In my opinion, you can achieve a focus stack with 2-3 images in most scenarios when you don't have a foreground element within two feet of your lens at f/6.3. You only need more images if you're shooting ultra-wide with a foreground element right in front of your lens.

If you're using something like Helicon Focus to merge the images, more is always better just in case, but if blending by hand, try to keep your workflow simple with 2-3 images.
