The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by PM Narendra Modi, approved the ₹1,435 crore PAN 2.0 initiative to upgrade the current PAN/TAN system. This initiative aims to create a seamless digital experience by integrating core and non-core PAN/TAN services into a unified, paperless platform under the Digital India programme. Existing PAN cards will remain valid, but taxpayers can upgrade to a QR code-enabled card for free. PAN 2.0 focuses on enhancing efficiency, security, and taxpayer convenience, making PAN a common identifier for digital interactions across government systems. The rollout date is yet to be announced.
