STORYLINE
Leaders from Europe and Africa attended a dinner at the end of the first day of the joint European Union and African Union Summit in Lisbon on Saturday night.
During the day, African and European leaders who have been at odds with each other for years over issues such as human rights and post-colonial grievances, set out for a political and economic partnership between the two continents.
After the first summit in 2000, a planned second meeting three years later was called off when some African nations reacted to the EU's refusal to invite Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe.
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown stayed away from the current Summit in protest at Mugabe's presence.
United Kingdom's Labour peer Baroness Valerie Amos is instead the UK representative.
Britain and other EU countries have accused Mugabe of economic mismanagement, failure to curb corruption and contempt for democracy.
The EU is eager to lock Africa into a closer relationship that will foster trade between Europe and a continent that is set to become one of the world's big new markets.
Africa wants greater European support to raise the continent's standard of living.
Despite recent economic growth, around 40 percent of people in sub-Saharan Africa still live on less than one US dollar a day.
Activists have chided the summit organisers for failing to dedicate specific sessions to human rights concerns in Zimbabwe and Darfur.
In Sudan's Darfur region, four years of bloodshed between ethnic African rebels and Arab militias allegedly backed by the Arab-dominated government in Khartoum have left an estimated 200-thousand dead and driven some 2.5 (m) million from their homes.
