Egg Hatching in Old Micro-Waves OVEN - Egg incubator / Hatched chicks

To hatch eggs into chicks, start by ensuring the eggs are fertile. They should come from healthy hens and roosters, and if you're unsure about fertility, you can candle the eggs after a few days to check for development. Set up your incubator with a steady temperature of 99.5°F (37.5°C) and keep the humidity around 45–50% for the first 18 days, increasing it to 65–70% during the final three days of incubation to help with hatching. Proper ventilation is also crucial for oxygen flow.

Turn the eggs at least three times a day during the first 18 days to prevent the embryo from sticking to the shell, and stop turning them on Day 18, when the chick needs to position itself for hatching. Eggs should be placed pointy side down, as this helps the chick orient itself for hatching. You can candle the eggs around Day 7 and again on Day 14 to check for embryo development, looking for signs such as a dark shadow or veins inside the egg.

From Day 18 to 21, stop turning the eggs and increase the humidity. This is known as the "lockdown" phase, where the eggs should not be disturbed. Keep the incubator or hatcher clean and prepared with extra water to maintain the right humidity levels. By Day 21, the chicks should begin pipping, or cracking the shell, which can take several hours. Don't intervene unless absolutely necessary, as it’s normal for hatching to take time.

Once the chicks have hatched, leave them in the incubator to dry off before moving them to a brooder. The brooder should be warm, with the temperature at about 95°F (35°C) during the first week, gradually lowering as the chicks grow. Ensure they have access to clean water and chick starter feed. After Day 25, if any eggs remain unhatched, it’s best to dispose of them as they may be infertile or the chick inside may have died. This process typically takes 21 days, although slight variations can occur depending on the breed and conditions.
