Though only a recent member of Prout Alliance (PA), for two years, Japa worked as a proutist in the Los Angeles (LA) area in the late 70’s. This work included community outreach with the Socialist Workers Party for the Leonard Peltier Defence Committee. Japa also worked with the Progressive Labor Party in opposition to KKK organizing in the South Bay area of Los Angeles. At this time, Proutists in the city published and distributed a pamphlet in which Japa contributed poetry. Also in the late seventies, Japa attended national and international Prout Conferences.

After briefly doing outreach in the Detroit area and while pursuing his teacher certification, Japa joined the Socialist Workers Party (SWP). This work mostly involved building labor solidarity with the struggles against racism, sexism and against the US interventions in Central and South America. Japa visited Grenada and talked with some of its revolutionary council members before the US invasion. After the invasion, Japa gave a slide presentation to high school and college classes on his experiences in Grenada.

Japa was the founding grades teacher for the Waldorf School of Louisville. While focusing on his teaching vocation, his community work for the next twenty years was mostly supportive of the work of the local Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Kentucky Alliance Against Political and Racist Oppression. Japa was a delegate to the first DC convention of the National Black Independent Political Party.

During this time Japa studied the social philosophy of Rudolf Steiner, the founder of Waldorf Education. After studying his book Social Renewal, Japa developed a slide presentation to integrate Steiner’s and PR Sarkar’s social theories for study groups.

During COVID, Japa began to work with the Beloved Community organized by Interfaith Paths to Peace (IPP). The groups mission has been to build connections between grassroots violence intervention groups and the faith community to help resource grassroots groups. Japa is the current Board President of IPP.

Japa recently joined the Steering Committee of Prout Alliance. His hope is with effective community organizing to do a small part in the evolution of a new human society.
