Full painting tutorial. I demonstrate my own workflow: getting ideas, working with inspiration and in practice from start to finish showing how to paint a large painting using acrylic paint.

In for the last couple of weeks I have been working on a painting. Some of you might recognize it from the background in my earlier videos, and I will also talk about what I mean, when I say that this work is abstract.

Abstract painting allows you to express yourself without the limitation of realism. Your painting doesn't have to look like anything you already know, and the only limitations of an abstract painting are the ones you set for yourself.

Some people believe it's easy to paint abstract paintings, but it is not. When you want to paint something out of the blue with no resemblance to the known world around us, you must bring something different to the painting … you must expose your own personality for everyone to see. That can be hard.

Today the word abstract is often used to describe paintings which depicts something our brain cannot immediately recognize. Our brain then tries to find known patterns in what we see, it searches for something … anything … it can use, and this surge is open for more possibilities. This is why abstract paintings occasionally can inspire us to feel all kind of things, moods or experiences of a non-visual kind.

At least this is my way of understanding what abstract painting is doing to us. Slightly simplified, I believe that when I paint an abstract painting part of the picture is inspired by experiences from outside my head, and part of it is inspired by experiences from inside my head.

The balance between outside-/inside experience varies, and the more non-figurative or abstract a painting is, the more I find my inspiration from inside my head.

I am quite sure that many will disagree with me so feel free to comment below.

In the world of music you may recognize the sound of a locomotive or a galloping horse in the rhythm of the music. We can experience music as sad or cheerful, we can even get touched to tears, because of the way the music affects our emotions. We only hear the music, we sense nothing else, so music is a pure abstraction, and it’s kind of the same thing I want to do in my paintings.

What are the colours of a kiss or the feeling of hunger? In the video I give my interpretation in an abstract painting and I find it more interesting than painting something figurative.

I graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Art not as a painter, but as an architect. During my studies I spent a lot of time drawing and painting especially with water colours. I can paint a figurative painting, which I often do when on holiday. I sit in a cozy cafe in Rome or somewhere else and paint what I see. I enjoy this a lot, and it reinforces and prolongs my memory of this very place, but that's not what makes my heart beat faster ... it's painting abstract paintings, which I do alone in my studio.

This is what this video is about: to paint an abstract painting from start to finish.

I hope you will like this video.
Enjoy.
