When the Rim Road around Crater Lake closes to cars because of deep snow, it becomes a ski and snowshoe route! We've wanted to ski this for ages and finally had a chance to do it! It was absolutely beautiful... until winter weather blew in on day 3 and the trip became intense!

Thank you Ranger Dave for suggesting we do this in March or April for the best views, daylight, and conditions. The view of the lake is the best on the west side of the lake, and our first full day was forecast to have the highest chance of good weather weather, so we went clockwise and hit the west side first. That was a wise move, since much of our third day was a white-out.

In addition to our usual cold-weather camping gear, we picked up snow-stakes before heading out so we could put up our tent in deep snow. Here's some of the rest of the gear we brought:
