How to Build your Own PCB with a CNC Mill

Step 1. Design the PCB
I used KiCAD. The key point is to keep traces and pads as big as possible.

Step 2. Make the Copper Clad FR-4 board as flat as Possible
This will determine how consistently you can make PCBs. If you have an autoleveler, ignore this step.

Step 3. Cut the Blank Board with a shallow angle bit
This is counter intuitive as you’d think a thin bit would help, but the wide bit help eliminate burrs which could short the traces.

Step 4. Carefully examine the PCB with a light behind it.
The light will illuminate where copper has been cut.

Step 5. Make a thin layer of Soldermask
The thinner the better, but consistency matters most.

Step 6. Partially cure solder mask and then cut the pads with a spring bit
The spring bit will eliminate cutting through the solder mask.

Step 7. Finish curing solder mask and then apply tinning solution (if available).
You can tin the pads with solder.

Step 8. While soldering components, be very careful not to overheat pads.
Consumer solder masks are often under performing which requires additional care.

I used these steps to make a custom board that is basically an arduino uno and nrf24l01. It controls a plane I made.
