ABOUT THE MOTION: This House Believes China Is The New Imperial Power in Hong Kong
The situation in Hong Kong has become ever more serious over the past year. The Michaelmas before last, the Union hosted Martin Lee, Evan Fowler, Benny Tai and Nathan Law - the latter two of those are no longer able to visit the UK. Yet there are no simple answers for Hong Kong. How can it cohabit with and inside of a country which has strikingly different values and aims? Is Hong Kong suffering unjustly or is it as free and prosperous as any city can be in the 21st Century, a Century that will surely belong to China?

ABOUT THE SPEAKER (Closing the Proposition)
Joshua Wong is a student activist and politician from Hong Kong, who serves as secretary-general of pro-democracy party Demosistō. He first rose to international prominence during the 2014 Hong Kong protests, and has played a major role in the Umbrella Movement, and in persuading US politicians to pass the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act during the 2019 protests.

ABOUT THE CAMBRIDGE UNION: From its small beginnings as a debating society, the Cambridge Union is the oldest debating society in the world and the largest student society in Cambridge. The Union remains a unique forum for the free exchange of ideas and the art of public debate.
