The Ren & Stimpy Show: Fire Dogs (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

A playthrough of THQ's 1994 license-based action game for the Super NES. The Ren & Stimpy Show: Fire Dogs.

Ren & Stimpy really got around the video game circuit back in the 8 and 16-bit days - Fire Dogs was one of three (!) released on the SNES, and in terms of quality, it sits right about on par with the rest of them.

The game splits its levels by days of the week - Monday though Friday - and each is made up of two parts. First, you have to search the maze-like firehouse for all of your equipment while avoiding random hazards and load it on the truck before time runs out. The alarm will then sound, and you have to go find Ren so that the pair of you can hop on the truck to save the day. After arriving on the scene, Ren and Stimpy run around trying to catch stuff people out of their windows, and once they've filled their quota the next stage begins.

Like all of the other SNES Ren & Stimpy games, Fire Dogs looks and sounds fantastic - it's quite close to the TV show. Of course, with a high profile developer like Argonaut, you'd expect as much. The game play itself isn't too bad either. I'm not a big fan of item searches in mazes, but it's solid. The real stumbling block for Fire Dogs is the rescue stages - the later ones are insanely fast and require near perfection to get through, and are difficult enough that they probably ensured most never got to see the ending. I always hated them - they felt so unfair. The few times I've ever managed to finish this, I think luck played just as much a role as skill did. That's not really ideal.

Fire Dogs does an amazing job at capturing the feel and style of the show. I just wish that the quality presentation supported a more substantial, better put-together game.
