St Leonards, also known as Church In The Woods, is located in Hollington just outside of Hastings, East Sussex. Originally known as St Rumbolds, this church dates to the 13th century but it is suspected as being a place of worship since the 11th century.
The state of the church declined over time and by the mid 19th century Sir Charles Montolieu, after much demand from the parishioners, repaired the church. The repairs took over 20 years and were completed by Matilda Dampner as a tribute to her parents.
This left it looking largely Victorian in architecture.

The first recorded burial is dated 1606 and the oldest surviving headstone dates from 1678 (though we couldn’t find it!).

There are several legends and miracles attributed to St Leonards including a battle between the Devil and the builders of the church and a miracle involving a former vicar. It is Grade 2 listed and well worth a visit.

We visited on a rainy autumn day.
