I'll be showing you how to present like Dana White on this week's episode of MasterTalk. Visit https://www.rockstarcommunicator.com/ to attend one of my FREE LIVE online trainings.
1. Be unbelievably outspoken about where you stand, and people will appreciate it. (0:53)
Dana’s considered to be a controversial guy by many. He gets a lot of hate for some of the decisions he makes about the UFC and the direction he takes. But, whether you like him or not, one thing we can’t take away from Dana is that he’s not afraid to speak his mind. Most CEOs of billion dollar companies, you don’t even know who they are, whereas Dana is many ways is the black sheep in the industry.
You know EXACTLY who is, and what he’s about, and regardless of where you stand on Dana, you know who the guy is, and what he believes. That helps the UFC brand over the long run. If we analyze the UFC’s main competitors like Bellator or ONE Championship, we have no idea who the CEO is and what their positions are on anything, so we almost forget about them and their brands.
The lesson here is based on the industry you’re in, one way to differentiate yourself is to show up with full transparency about your views on certain things even if it’s outside your area of expertise to show that you’re more than just the person who’s running a company or idea, but that you’re willing to go the extra mile to have more nuanced conversations over subjects your competitors won’t even dare touch.
2. Infuse your personal brand into the center of your own ideas. (2:28)
Dana’s very smart at product placement. In an episode I did recently breaking down Warren Buffett’s communication style, I explained that Warren puts Coca Cola cans in front of him or eats Dairy Queen a lot in public, because it increases sales since he’s a big investor in both of those companies. In some way, Warren himself has become a brand. That’s exactly what’s happening with Dana White too.
The lesson being here is find ways to insert yourself in the core of your own ideas, don’t hide because it shows PASSION for what you do. People can hate Dana all they want, but they know he LOVES what he does. So, whether it’s being at the front and center of a video like this one, or doing more media appearances, find creative ways to bring out your own personality into the brand, because it adds more flavour to it and shows people your INVOLVEMENT and CARE with what you’re doing.
3. If you end up being wrong about something, quickly apologize, correct it & MOVE ON. (4:56)
Dana White’s been wrong many times in his career, but NO ONE CARES. Example, many years ago, when Dana was much younger, he said constantly that women would NEVER fight in the UFC as long as he’s President and he changed his mind after a meeting with Ronda Rousey, who became an icon in the sport as well as other greats like Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko.
But nobody remembers that old version of Dana. Why? Because he owned up to his mistake and just moved on from it. He’s even quoted as saying “Anything can be changed. Anything can be fixed. So, even if we might be mad at an action he takes, we’ll forget about it years later as a society which leads to the most important lesson. We’re all entitled to making mistakes on our journey to sharing our ideas with the world, so don’t wait for perfection or you’ll spend the rest of your life waiting to share what can actually help someone out there.
If you get into something that you're passionate about, and if you really believe in it, you gotta get up every day and fight. – Dana White. Whether you like the guy or not, we have to give him credit for taking the UFC that was once a bankrupt company into the incredible juggernaut it is today. Dana is a generational talent in the fight game and a character I believe we’ll remember just as well as the best fighters to ever be apart of this sport.
