This late 1960s/early 1970s color training film (TF-6748) about the F-111 weapon system and F-111A attack radar mission profile was produced by the United States Air Force. Colorful graphics uncover the many knobs and controls on the General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark supersonic medium-range interdictor and tactical strike aircraft’s instrument panel (:25-:55). A pilot and instructor sit in the cockpit of an F-111 for attack radar scope training. A gloved hand turns a knob for the antennae. Another screen shows a dial for the CRT video. The gloved hand turns a knob back and forth as the attach radar scope screen responds (:56-2:10). There is an emblem of a skull with two bones crossed through it on both helmets (2:11-2:26). An altimeter reading is shown, and other dials. The patch on the shoulder of the pilot is a pirate. The tail of the next F-111 is NA D46. The aircraft marshaller guides the aircraft (O64) out, where it then taxis on the runway. A close-up of the pilot’s face is shown through his helmet and gear (2:27-4:02). The plane stops at the arming area for a safety check before taking off. Close-ups of the pilot are interspersed. A front view from the ground shows the F-111 lifting off overhead and another view of the takeoff from the side (4:03-5:45). Two F-111s fly in formation. The attack radar scope is shown scanning. A sensitivity setting is turned (5:46-6:45). Animation shows the angle and trajectory mathematics involved for approaching the target (6:46-8:02). A close-up of the pilot’s eyes and black and white skull helmet are shown (8:03-8:16). The pilot looks at a topographical map and adjusts knobs and settings accordingly, including the radar altimeter (8:17-8:57). A view looking at the windshield in flight shows the two pilots, interspersed with the pilot and other adjustments. This is followed by animation of more mathematical formulas for approaching the target (8:58-9:51). The two F-111s are shown in flight next to each other. The map is checked. Animation shows how the radar works. The views shifts between the outside and inside of the plane. A top-down view of the pilots is shown (9:52-12:41). The active radar screen is shown. The pilot pushes the white sector button, narrowing down the radar screen to focus on the target between the crosshairs (12:42-14:42). A film is shown of common mistakes, using screenshots of the radar results (14:43-15:48). The pilot is shown inside making adjustments, the two pilots are shown from above, and the two planes are shown flying side by side. The plane lands overhead, shot from underneath (15:49-19:10). The training film screen flickers in the dark room as the pilots watch it (19:11-19:44).
