Acts 8

Chapter seven introduces us to Saul. They laid their clothes at the feet of a young man, Saul of Tarsus.

Saul called himself the Hebrew of Hebrews, the elite of select.

Phil. 3, I more so: 5 circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee; 6 concerning zeal, persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.
7 But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ


Paul is a super Jew. A radical Rabbi. He new Torah and Tinakh the oral intrepretations.

The Conversion of Saul of Tarsus becomes a pivotal to the rest of the New Testament.

The conversion is the beginning of the prophecy found in Acts 1:8.

Augustine said, “we owe the conversion of Saul to the prayer of Stephen…”

Living with someone under conviction is very difficult. Saul was disturbed with the stoning of Stephen.

Verse 1- Now Saul was consenting to Stephen’s death. Kill Him.

Great persecution scattered the church except the Apostles.

Verse 2- The Church wept with lamentation in the Stephen’s stoning.

Watch this, Act 1:8 and Acts 8:1 go hand in hand. If you do Acts 1:8 expect Acts 8:1 We are going to see how Acts 1:8 is fulfilled. By Persecution.

Jesus said, the gospel is like seed sown in good soil. People are the seed
Barrers. The seed of the Gospel will go every where by Believers mouth.

Verse 3- havoc- speak of a wild bore rampaging through a garden or an army
Sweeping through a city or country side. Like Sherman did in Civil War.

Saul of Tarsus is an agent of the devil to persecute the church. Phil 3
And they were all together and had all things in common. Until Saul
Comes on the scene.

Verse 4- they were scattered preaching the Gospel.

Verse 6- Phillip is introduced, Here is another one of the 7 deacons mentioned back in Acts 4.

Acts 21:8, tells us that Phillip is given a title as “Phillip the Evangelist.”

Jesus went to Samaria- Remember, “Jesus needed to go to Samaria.”
10th Century BC- ten tribes went north Samaria. Two tribes stayed in Jerusalem. In a matter of time the Assyrians are taken over.
Assyrians would re-populate the lands the people they had taken over.
So the assyrians intermarried with the Jews that were left and they became the Samiritans from Samaria.

They are not pure Jewish blood line anymore. The people in Judea saw them as half breeds.

Jesus had to go meet a women. So when Phillip get’s there they had heard
From the Samaritan women.

Verse 6-7, Principle of Little then receive much. We are tested on the little. You start small and work your way through it.

Zechariah- people were discourage, it was not getting done very well. Chapter 4- God gives a vision of 7 candle lamp stand. Next there are two olive trees supplying the vessels with pipes providing the oil to the Menorah. You are seeing the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel… It is not by might, buy not by power, but by my Spirit saith the Lord. Do not despise small beginings.

Zechariah 4, Now the angel who talked with me came back and wakened me, as a man who is wakened out of his sleep. 2 And he said to me, “What do you see?”
So I said, “I am looking, and there is a lampstand of solid gold with a bowl on top of it, and on the stand seven lamps with seven pipes to the seven lamps. 3 Two olive trees are by it, one at the right of the bowl and the other at its left.” 4 So I answered and spoke to the angel who talked with me, saying, “What are these, my lord?”
5 Then the angel who talked with me answered and said to me, “Do you not know what these are?”
And I said, “No, my lord.”
6 So he answered and said to me: ‘Who are you, O great mountain?
Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain!
And he shall bring forth the capstone
With shouts of “Grace, grace to it!” ’ ”
8 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
9 “The hands of Zerubbabel
Have laid the foundation of this [a]temple;
His hands shall also finish it.
Then you will know
That the Lord of hosts has sent Me to you.
10 For who has despised the day of small things?

Verse 8- And there was great joy in the city. This is the result of the Gospel.
