Located in the county of Cumbria (although historically in Lancashire), and around 55 miles south of Carlisle, is the town of Grange-over-Sands.

The first mention of Grange-over-Sands dates back to the 15th or 16th century in the ancient Cartmel Priory Registers when it was recorded as 'Grange-with-Kentisbank'. The name is believed to be derived from old French 'graunge', meaning barn or granary, where the monks of Cartmel Priory stored some of their grain (Cartmel is the neighbouring village). The 'over-Sands' suffix was added in 1858 by the Reverend Wilson Rigg, who was fed up with his post going to Grange in Borrowdale (a village about 30 miles to the north).

For centuries, Grange was a small fishing village. This began to change with the arrival of the railway in 1857 courtesy of the Ulverstone [SIC] & Lancaster Railway. This opened it up to visitors, marking the beginnings of its life as a seaside resort. Hotels and health-related hydropathic establishments were built. By the 1870s it was described as 'in much local repute as a watering-place'. According to census data, the population had grown from around 200 in 1861 to around 1,700 in 1881.

In 1865 railway industrialist John Brogden laid out the Ornamental Gardens and lake in what had been a swampy cut-off from the sea. These feature in the walk shortly after the 8-minute mark, complete with various species of wildfowl, including some exotic ones.

In 1904 the promenade was built, and later extended. This is situated between the railway and the sands which overlook Morecambe Bay. During the Edwardian era, Grange-over-Sands was known as the 'Torquay of the North'. A lido was built in 1932 by the seafront, but eventually closed in 1993.

In 1974 the historical counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, along with the Furness Peninsula of Lancashire, merged to form the ceremonial county of Cumbria. Since then, Grange-over-Sands has been part of the South Lakeland district of Cumbria.

Today, Grange-over-Sands station is situated on the Furness Line, which runs between Lancaster and Barrow-in-Furness. This makes it well situated as a base for tourists wishing to explore the southern end of the Lake District to the immediate north, as well as the town itself which has remained largely true to its Victorian architectural aesthetic.
