What It Takes To Build The World's Finest Rowboats | Episode 16

Boat Designer Harold Aune and Boat Builder Nick Brech walk us through the process of building the Whitehall Spirit® Solo 14® Slide Seat Sculling Rowboat and the Whitehall Spirit® Tango 17® Double Slide Seat Sculling Rowboat, the world's first modern, ultra-tough, light weight, ultra-strong co-polymer thermoformed boats.

Co-polymer is rigid and stiff and will not change shape like rotocast polyethylene does when exposed to direct sunlight. Co-polymer is also much more impact-resistant than fiberglass hull construction and is virtually maintenance-free. The double hull construction makes the Solo 14® and Tango 17® virtually unsinkable.

The exterior and interior have an acrylic coating called Solarkote® bonded to the surface that is UV-proof. That means the boat retains a glossy yacht-like finish and stays shiny and looking good for years. An ‘interdeck’ bonded between the hull and deck further stiffens the boat and reinforces the cockpit deck, track tower bases, and footstop mounts, which are subject to the major forces of the rowing process.

Our goal here at Whitehall Rowing & Sail has always been to introduce people to the sport of rowing. Not in tippy, narrow rowing shells used in competition rowing by clubs and colleges, but for people like ourselves out in safe, stable, seaworthy boats, enjoying the sport of rowing in a benfecial, holistic way.

Whitehall Rowing & Sail use the same technology in terms of sliding seat, sculling oars, and technique, as in racing shells. But, utilized in proven, stable, safe, and seaworthy rowboats.

Rowing with modern sculling gear is one of the healthiest, low-impact bosy workouts known. As we have said for years, rowing burns twice the calories as jogging or kayaking with no stress on the knees or joints.
