ESL CARD GAME: COMPARATIVES

The game is really a must-play because it not only drills three forms of adjectives but also makes students use them in context in full sentences.

Level of English – elementary
Number of students – groups of 5-8 students
Age of students – school children and adults
Materials needed – set of cards
Time – 5 min for revision, 15 minutes for playing the game in groups

How to play the game.

At the beginning of the game every player has 6 cards. Every adjectıve is written on any three cards. The aim is to make a chain of the three forms of adjectives in positive, comparative and superlative degree.

The fırst player chooses a card and makes up a sentence using the adjective on the cards in positive degree. For example, ‘My bike is fast’ and puts the cards on the desk for all the other players to see it.

Another player who has got the same adjective puts the card with this adjective on the desk and makes up a sentence with comparative degree. ‘My car is faster than your bike’

Another student with the same adjective makes up a sentence in the superlative degree and says ‘A plane is the fastest’. These three cards are no longer in the game. Now another sentence with another adjective in positive degree is made up by a student sitting next to the one who started the game.

Students continue playing the game clockwise until one student has no more cards on hands. This person is the winner.
