Bonsai Road Trip: Discovering Masterpieces on the Garden Route

Welcome to our exciting journey through the Garden Route, where we explored some of the most amazing bonsai collections in South Africa! Over the course of five days, my family and I took a much-needed break and set out in our camper van to discover hidden bonsai treasures from George to Oudtshoorn.

Our adventure began at the charming Arendsrus Campground, where we soaked in the breathtaking countryside. Along the way, we made unforgettable stops at various bonsai enthusiasts' homes, each with its unique twist and impressive collections. From the massive Wild Olives and Baobabs at Lampies' garden to the meticulously planned and artistically laid out garden of Wessels, every visit was a feast for the eyes and a learning experience.

We also had the pleasure of meeting Andre from Pygmy Bonsai Nursery, who shared his insights on growing bonsai from seeds, cuttings, and ground layers. Earl from Bonsai Clinic dazzled us with his creative displays and philosophy on styling bonsai, reminding us that good bonsai takes time and patience. Our final stop was at Dr. Tobie Kleynhans' stunning collection, where the craftsmanship and attention to detail left us in awe.
