It is here that Rohini ji gave birth to Shri Balram ji. The name Mahavan itself signifies that there was a dense forest here earlier. Mahavan is two kilometers ahead of Gokul. People also call it Old Gokul. It is here that a little ahead of Raskhan's tomb is the Brahmanda Ghat on the banks of the Yamuna. According to religious belief, here on the pretext of eating soil, Shri Krishna had given Yashoda a vision of the whole universe with his mouth. It is said that one who has darshan of this place gets salvation.
Chaurasi pillar main temple During the Mughal period, in 1634 AD, Emperor Shah Jahan had hunted four lions in this forest. In the year 1018 AD, Mahmud Ghaznavi attacked Mahavan and destroyed and corrupted the eighty-four pillar i.e. Nand Bhavan. Since then it could not regain its old form. Parjanya Gopa, the father of Gopraja Nanda Baba, previously lived in Nandgaon, while his five sons were born to him Upananda, Abhinand, Srinanda, Sunand and Nandan, and two daughters, Sananda and Nandini

He worshiped 'Narayan' for his son Nanda to get a child and he came to know from Akashvani that a son of great mighty, omnipotent, who would defeat the demons, would soon be born to Shrinand. After a few days, the uprising of Asuras like Keshi etc. started. Parjanya Gopa along with the whole family and close relatives attended this Brihadavana. This forest is adorned with a variety of trees, vines and flowers, where there are green pastures for the cows to graze. Seeing such a place, all the Gopas of Braj were very happy and started living here very happily. In this Nand Bhavan, Yashoda Maiya gave birth to Krishna Kanhaiya and Yogmaya in the form of Yamaj children at midnight. It was here in Yashoda's hymn that Vedic rites in the form of caste-cutting etc. took place
Here Shri Krishna saved them by killing the demons named Putana, Trinavarta, Shaktasur. Krishna and Baldev were named in Nanda's cowshed nearby. It was here that Rama, Krishna walked on their knees, here Maiya Yashoda tied the fickle child Krishna with a bow, Krishna saved Yamalarjuna. It was here that till the age of two-and-a-half-three years, Shri Krishna and Ram's children's games took place. The Leelasthalis of Brihadavan or Mahavan Gokul have also been described in the Brahmanda Purana. current sightseeing Sri Nanda Temple, Yashoda Sleeping Place, Ukhal Sthal, Shakat Bhanjan Place, Yamalarjuna Salvation Place, Sapta Samudrik Well, Nearby Gopishwar Mahadev, Yogmaya Birthplace, Bal Gokuleshwar, Rohini Temple, Putana Slaughter are worth visiting.
