Sir Robert “Bobby” Charlton, the former English football player, was born on 11 October 1937 to a family of footballers. Regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of all time, Bobby made it to the list of the most significant member of the England team who won the World Cup in 1966. In the same year, the soccer legend was also presented with the Ballon d'Or. His journey in becoming renowned for his attacking instincts and passing abilities from midfield and his ferocious long-range shot as well as helping club Manchester United climb the ladder of success and are tremendous. The star player is also widely known for his fitness and stamina.

Bobby was a student of Bedlington Grammar School when he was first spotted playing for East Northumberland schools by Joe Armstrong, Manchester United chief scout, in 9 February 1953. He was just 15 years when he signed with Man United on 1 January 1953 along with Wilf McGuinness. Charlton has scored more goals for England and United than any other player and holds the record for having the most appearances for Man United (758) before being surpassed by Ryan Giggs. In 1956, Charlton made his debut for the Manchester United first-team. By the next two seasons, he gained a regular place in the team. This was also the time when he survived the spine-chilling Munich air disaster of 1958 when rescued by Harry Gregg. Bobby Charlton has helped the United win a host of tournaments including the Football League in 1965, World Cup medal with England in 1966 and another Football League title the next year. He was appointed the captain of Manchester United in 1968 and led the team win the European Cup by scoring two goals in the final. He left Manchester United to become manager of Preston North End for the 1973 - 74 season.

He has been awarded a host of trophies for his fabulous work in this beautiful game including FWA Footballer of the Year, FIFA World Cup All-Star Team, Ballon d'Or, PFA Merit Award, FWA Tribute Award, FIFA World Cup All-Time Team, Football League 100 Legends, English Football Hall of Fame, FIFA 100, UEFA Golden Jubilee Poll, BBC Sports Personality of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award and Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award.

Charlton married the love of his life, Norma Ball, whom he had first met at an ice rink in Manchester in 1959. They together have two daughters, Suzanne and Andrea, the former one being a weather forecaster for the BBC during the 1990s. The soccer star is also related to famous footballers known till date including Jack Milburn (Leeds United and Bradford City), George Milburn (Leeds United and Chesterfield), Jim Milburn (Leeds United and Bradford City) and Stan Milburn (Chesterfield, Leicester City and Rochdale) and Jackie Milburn (Newcastle United and England).
