To be able to play over the chord changes freely, what do you need to learn? Modes? Theory?
I think you should learn bassline first! Level ONE: Simple bass line (no fills!)
Level TWO: Phrasing with triad approach. Level THREE: Do this with a metronome (2&4)
In order to improve musically first learn simple basic idea, practice it well, then challenge with in time, groove it! Simple is the best!
