Hi, I'm Matt with etrailer. Today we're gonna be talking about the Gen-Y Phantom XT ball mount. Now this gonna be a great option if you're looking for something just to kind of help your rides feel a little bit smoother and maintain the longevity of your gear too. So let's take a closer look at it. Now this is gonna be for the type of person who's just doing some more regular hauling. So let's say you got a utility trailer, a boat trailer, or even a horse trailer behind you.

It has a decent amount of weight to it, but when you're driving around, you'd notice there's a lot of jostling, or you can feel a lot of that road shock not only on your vehicle side but also on your trailer side. Like I said, this is gonna help reduce that and make sure things last longer 'cause over a long time, if you have a lot of vibration on any of your components, they're eventually gonna wear out. This is gonna help reduce that. But those are just a couple examples of what type of trailers you can pull with this. Today we're mainly gonna be focusing on a few things. The first thing is gonna be talking about what stands out about it and how that works. Then we'll go into the specs about this specific one. And then I'll actually take it out on our road test to see how it feels and how it performs. And then I'll give you my final thoughts.

The thing that really stands out about this is that it's gonna have this torsion flex device built on here. So we're gonna have this outer tubing to it that you'll see on this little display case we have here. We're gonna have that outer tubing, and inside of there, we're gonna have this metal rod, and around that metal rod, we're gonna have these rubber cords that go all the way across. And so what this is doing is when you're experiencing any type of bumps in the road, some shock, or when you're making some turns, those rubber cords are designed to twist and absorb those shocks. So it's just gonna make your ride just that much smoother.

And what's really nice about that design is it's not gonna require any type of regular maintenance. So when we compare that to more of an airbag type of ball mount, like Shocker Hitch, I like their ball mounts. They work really nicely. The only downside to it is you gotta maintain air in the air bag. And a lot of times that's also gonna require you having a compressor on hand if you wanna make it easier. So that's gonna be another investment down the road. Versus this, I just need to make sure this is properly greased, which you only have to do that every so often. And it actually gives you the exact amount in your instructions. Now there is gonna be another torsion option like this, and it's gonna be made by Gen-Y, and that's gonna be the Gen-Y Torsion. I like that one, but it's more rated for commercial use. So it's gonna be more heavy duty, and it's gonna be great when you have heavy loads on here all the time. But if you're just a regular hauler just having moderate sized loads every now and then, I think this is gonna be the better option for you. So this whole ball mount here is gonna be rated for 10,000 pounds for your towing capacity and 1,000 pounds for your tongue weight. And really what the difference there is your towing capacity is the total weight of the trailer you're pulling behind you pulling this way. Now your tongue capacity, that's gonna be the downward force that's being applied to the ball. And what's unique about this one is it's gonna have two balls on here that are welded together, but they're both gonna have the same capacity. That's gonna be a 2 5/16 on the top and a two inch one on the bottom. It's really easy to switch these around. All you have to do is pull this pin. And Gen-Y's gonna have those twist clips here. They're really easy to take on and off. All I have to do is flip it around like that. And there you have it. And that's what I like about this is the ball is relatively lightweight compared to the rest of the mount. What's also nice about this, we're gonna get a decent amount of adjustment. So whether if you need a rise or a drop, you can still get this. Right now with the drop, we're gonna get four inches. And to put it in the rise position, I'll just have to pull my pin and clip.
