Part of Palestinian Folklore and passed on and popular throughout the Arab
World, An Ataaba Mawal is a 4-line poem with the melody improvised and
often introduced with an long Awwwf in the beggining ending with Yaba(my
father). Dhareef Al Tool(meaning Hey, Tall One) originally tells the story of a
tall man who was leaving his country and from the singer’s perspective was
scared he would forget his land and lyrics vary from topic to topic. This song’s
topic is about caring for this country and freeing this country through revolution
and is popularly performed by Al-Ashiqeen Band since 1980. The term Ala Dalouna means “let’s help one
another”. Originating from when villagers used to help each other, it came to be
when builders and villagers used to form a line and join hands to stomp
cracked mud into place when the weather damaged the roofs of their houses.
This patching work was done to prevent rain from seeping in on stormy days.
The joint effort needed to achieve this communal task is ta’awon (cooperation),
from which the Arabic word awneh (help) is derived from. This event developed
into the popular dabke song titled “Ala Dalouna,” roughly translated to
“Let’s go and help.” In this case, the legwork needed to compact the roofs
is what we now call the popular Palestinian folk dance — dabke — which
literally means “stomping of the feet” in Arabic and became widely popular throughout
the Levantine countries (Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine).
