Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu recently inaugurated the Deepam – 2 scheme in Idupuram, aimed at providing free cooking gas cylinders to eligible female citizens. This initiative was officially launched on November 1, 2024, at a beneficiary's home in Eedupuram village, Srikakulam district. The scheme is part of Naidu's "Super Six" poll promises ahead of the upcoming 2024 elections.
Under the Deepam – 2 scheme, eligible beneficiaries will receive three LPG cylinders per year, distributed at the rate of one cylinder every four months. The total projected cost of this initiative is approximately Rs 2,684 crore, which will be borne by the state government. During the launch event, Naidu personally lit a gas stove and prepared tea for a beneficiary, emphasizing the scheme's focus on improving the quality of life for low-income families135.
The booking process for these free gas cylinders commenced on October 29, 2024, and within the first day, nearly 430,000 bookings were reported, as stated by Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar. This overwhelming response highlights the significant demand for such assistance among the state's residents23.
Key Features of the Deepam – 2 Scheme:
Eligibility: The scheme primarily targets female citizens aged 18 and above who do not have any other LPG connection in their household.
Distribution: Each eligible beneficiary will receive three cylinders annually.
Booking Process: Citizens can book their cylinders online through designated oil companies' websites or via IVRS (Interactive Voice Response System).
Financial Support: Beneficiaries will receive a subsidy credited to their accounts shortly after booking, enhancing accessibility to cooking gas45.
