We examine what time dilation means for the fabric of reality,

entropy's statistical habit.

Einstein's relativity describes spacetime: a four-dimensional
structure where time stretches and compresses with velocity
and gravity. Your GPS corrects for time dilation every single
day. Without that correction, navigation drifts by miles
within hours. Time is elastic — and that elasticity is
engineered into every device in your pocket.

The block universe theory — also called eternalism — holds
that all moments exist simultaneously and permanently. The
past is not gone. The future is not unwritten. They are woven
into the same four-dimensional fabric as this moment. Einstein
believed this. Writing to the family of his friend Michele
Besso, he said the distinction between past, present and
future is "a stubbornly persistent illusion." He wrote those
words three weeks before his own death.

Carlo Rovelli's "The Order of Time" goes further: at the
level of quantum gravity, time does not appear in the
equations at all. What we call time — memory, anticipation,
loss, hope — may be a product of our thermodynamic
relationship to entropy. We are warm creatures in a cold
cosmos. That asymmetry may be all time ever is.

Does the past still exist? According to the block universe —
yes. Always. Every moment you have lived is permanently
embedded in spacetime. The people you have lost. The choices
you cannot take back. Not gone. Fixed. Eternal.

Whether that is a comfort or a terror depends on what you
believe about freedom.

The arrow of time — why coffee cools but never reheats, why
you remember yesterday but not tomorrow — is not written into
the fundamental laws of physics. Those laws are time-symmetric.
The arrow emerges from entropy alone. It is not a law.
It is a habit.
