नाथ' शब्द का प्रचलन हिन्दू, बौद्ध और जैन संतों के बीच विद्यमान है। 'नाथ' शब्द का अर्थ होता है स्वामी। वैष्णव में स्वामी और शैवों में 'नाथ' शब्द का महत्व है। आपने अमरनाथ, केदारनाथ, बद्रीनाथ आदि कई तीर्थस्थलों के नाम सुने होंगे।

आदि का अर्थ प्रारंभ। भगवान शंकर को 'भोलेनाथ' और 'आदिनाथ' भी कहा जाता है। आदिनाथ होने के कारण उनका एक नाम आदिश भी है। इस आदिश शब्द से ही आदेश शब्द बना है। 'नाथ' साधु जब एक-दूसरे से मिलते हैं तो आदेश शब्द का ही इस्तेमाल करते हैं।


भगवान शंकर की परंपरा को उनके शिष्यों बृहस्पति, विशालाक्ष, शुक्र, सहस्राक्ष, महेन्द्र, प्राचेतस मनु, भरद्वाज, अगस्त्य मुनि, गौरशिरस मुनि, नंदी, कार्तिकेय, भैरवनाथ आदि ने आगे बढ़ाया।

भगवान शंकर के बाद इस परंपरा में सबसे बड़ा नाम भगवान दत्तात्रेय का आता है। उन्होंने वैष्णव और शैव परंपरा में समन्वय स्थापित करने का कार्य किया। दत्तात्रेय को महाराष्ट्र में नाथ परंपरा का विकास करने का श्रेय जाता है। दत्तात्रेय को आदिगुरु माना जाता है।
भगवान दत्तात्रेय के बाद सिद्ध संत गुरु मत्स्येन्द्रनाथ ने 'नाथ' परंपरा को फिर से संगठित करके पुन: उसकी धारा अबाध गति से प्रवाहित करने का कार्य किया। चौरासी नाथों की परंपरा में सबसे प्रमुख हैं। उन्हें बंगाल, नेपाल, असम, तिब्बत और बर्मा में खासकर पूजा जाता है।

गुरु मत्स्येन्द्रनाथ के बाद उनके शिष्य गुरु गोरखनाथ ने शैव धर्म की सभी प्रचलित धारणाओं और धाराओं को एकजुट करने 'नाथ' परंपरा को एक नई ऊंचाई पर पहुंचाया। उनके लाखों शिष्यों में हजारों उनके जैसे ही सिद्ध होते थे।

इसके अलावा 'नाथ' साधुओं में प्रमुख नाम है- भर्तृहरि नाथ, नागनाथ, चर्पटनाथ, रेवणनाथ, कनीफनाथ, जालंधरनाथ, कृष्णपाद, बालक गहिनीनाथ योगी, गोगादेव, रामदेव, सांईंनाथ आदि।

After Lord Shankar, the biggest name in this tradition comes from Lord Dattatreya. He did the work of establishing coordination between Vaishnava and Shaivism. Dattatreya is credited with developing the Nath tradition in Maharashtra. Dattatreya is considered as the Adiguru.
After Lord Dattatreya, Siddha Saint Guru Matsyendranath re-organized the 'Nath' tradition and worked to make its stream flow again at uninterrupted speed. Chaurasi are most prominent in the tradition of Nathas. He is especially worshiped in Bengal, Nepal, Assam, Tibet and Burma.

After Guru Matsyendranath, his disciple Guru Gorakhnath took the 'Nath' tradition to a new height, uniting all the prevailing beliefs and currents of Shaivism. Thousands of his millions of disciples were just like him.

Apart from this, the prominent names of 'Nath' sadhus are - Bhartrihari Nath, Nagnath, Charpatnath, Revnath, Kanifnath, Jalandharnath, Krishnapad, Bal Gahininath Yogi, Gogadev, Ramdev, Sainath etc.
