Tyrone: It shouldn't be like this, it really shouldn't. It should be fair. Yeah, it should be fair or close to it, you know.

Brenda: They knew that I had needed those accommodations. They knew that. I had the walker, and wheelchair in county before I came here. They took my accommodations and said "You don't need them." It wasn't justified at all.

Tyrone: Here's my cell right here. It took me nine months just to see an eye doctor here. I went to see a specialist. He ordered me special glasses for the light and magnifiers to help me. Still I haven't been provided with any of this.

Rachael: So we're from Disability Rights Washington. We're going to do a prison monitoring talking to people about anything disability related. Protection and Advocacy agencies have unique federal authority to go into facilities that serve people with disabilities. Very few people can take cameras behind the prison walls to document condition and document resident concerns. Making Hard Time Harder is a report that's being put out by the Amplifying Voices of Inmates With Disabilities Prison Project, the AVID Project. The intent of the report was really to raise awareness of the issue of people with disabilities in prison from across the country.

Tyrone: I would've like to, you know, extended my education, like I said, I require visual aids in order to keep up with the rest of the class and I haven't been afforded any that. Brenda: I fell everyday because of my instability. As a disabled person, I have the right to have my accommodations.

Rachael: You're sentenced to a term in prison, and your term shouldn't be harder simply because you have a disability. Your sentence shouldn't be longer, and your conditions of confinement shouldn't be harsher simply because of your disability. Prisons are making hard time harder for inmates with disabilities.
