Web 2.0 has shifted the experience of the spectator as the internet has become a space for exhibition on its own through online platforms such as YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, Discord, etc.
From this, the spectator has been given the ability to simultaneously become the producer and consumer of content as online communities have formed which generate user-based content around established media properties.
In this video I discuss the online community around Super Mario 64, including the speed running community, discussions of the game itself, and its fan-generated content. As a case study I will discuss the fan created ROM hack B3313 as an example of the culmination of the community’s shared experience with the game, as well as the legal implications of this fan-generated content.
