I review Kino Lorber’s Blu-ray release of THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD (1935). It has been long overlooked in the Universal Horror canon for adapting Dickens’ final unfinished novel and not being the out and out horror film the advertising claimed. Claude Rains dominates in a mesmerizing performance and is supported by the ever charming David Manners plus a whole host of classic Universal faces, talents and even sets.
In the past Drood had only a VHS and Vault MOD DVD based on an old interlaced master.
This new HD scan from Universal is a big leap forward over those but it still is a VERY rough transfer. In any case I’m amazed this film has a Blu-ray release and Kino Lorber have commissioned a wonderful David Del Valle commentary which is worth the purchase alone.
