The way people typically talk about sin, it’s as something we do—an evil thought in the head or word from the mouth or deed with the body. Here Jesus talks about sin that way too. His list comprises thoughts, words, and actions. But his main point is where those sins originate. They aren’t bad choices or mistakes into which even good people sometimes happen to stumble. They are the product of a heart that is unable to produce anything but evil.
